The Statistician II will be part of the Biostatistics department at AHRI and will be responsible for the statistical analysis of data from research projects at AHRI. He/she will be expected to take on the role of study statistician on individual projects. In addition, the Statistician II will assist with providing statistical support to AHRI researchers, including statistical input into study protocols, research proposals and scientific manuscripts. The Statistician II may be based at Somkhele or Durban but will be expected to make visits to both sites to support AHRI investigators at the two locations.
Overview of Duties
- To take the role of study statistician for individual research projects at AHRI
- To prepare study-specific statistical analysis plans, in consultation with the project investigators and senior statisticians
- To perform statistical analysis of project data
- To contribute to the preparation of scientific reports and publications
- To collaborate with other members of the Data Science Unit, and provide a statistical perspective on designing and setting up study databases, data validation and quality control, and other data management activities,
- To provide statistical advice to AHRI researchers
- To contribute to statistical training of scientific staff at AHRI
1. A postgraduate qualification (MSc or PhD) in statistics
2. 2 years’ practical experience working as an applied medical statistician.
3. Experience of advanced quantitative data analysis
4. Experience analysing health information from demographic surveillance and/or routine data collection systems
5. Excellent knowledge of a statistical software package (e.g, R, Stata or SAS)
6. Experience of contributing to peer-reviewed publications
7. Previous experience of intervention trials is desirable
8. Experience of data management of epidemiological studies or randomised trials
